Company Competition

EA & Activision

Responsible for the creating of the Battlefield games including, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield Bad company, BF heroes, BF1943, Battlefield bad company 2, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. For the sake of keeping my comparisons simple I will only be covering Battlefield Bad Company, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 and comparing it to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern warfare 3.

Battlefield Bad Company had sold 2.59 million copies in the first year of release while Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare had achieved 7.1 million sales in the same time, this shows that in 2007-2008 Call of duty was a much more well known franchise compared to the Battlefield franchise.

Battlefield Bad company 2 had sold 2.04 million copies in the first ten weeks and accumulated  $122 million US dollars, while Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 had sold 8 million copies in the first week accumulating $550 million US dollars, Again the Battlefield Franchise was beat down by Call of Duty, the fast action of call of duty and lack of tactical stratagem needed must have made this game much more appealing to its audience compared to Battlefield.
Before the release of Battlefield 3, as usual, DICE released a
Beta for the Multiplayer part of the game, this beta had accumulated 8 millions players who were also potential customers. Soon after the beta the Game was released on the 25 of November 2011 for North America, and within the first week the game had sold approximately 5 million copies, with the sales constantly rising, more copies had to be shipped out, and by the 31st week, Battlefield 3 had sold 13.26 million copies. The total Profit came up to $900 Million US dollars before any DLC was released, and Battlefield Premium raked in an extra $37 million.

Call of duty Modern Warfare 3 in the first week of release had sold 7.4 million copies in the US and Europe alone, and on the first day of release, the game had brought in approximately $400 million dollars (£250 million) just in Britain and the US alone. Call of Duty had also "broken the Xbox Live record for the number of players on at the same time, according to Microsoft" stated by Shane Richmond in his review on the games sales for the Telegraph. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had sold a total of 15.03 million copies worldwide.  According to Activision the Game made more than $1 billion US dollars in 16 days, but exact figures haven't been released.

This time, while Battlefield Didn't match Call of Duty's sales, they were closer than ever, showing that the Franchise is becoming better known and more of an Audience favourite. With the release of Battlefield 4 and Call of duty around the corner, Maybe Battlefield will win this year and accumulate more sales.

EA's company Value compared to its Competitors

As of current (17/10/13), EA is worth approximately $7.49 billion US dollars, with each share being worth $24.51 US dollars. Compared to Activision which is worth $19.62 billion US dollars with its shares being worth $17.53 US dollars and Nintendo Being worth $16.40 billion US dollars with its shares being worth $14.63 US dollars. Over last 20 years EA has had a massive increase of wealth compared to Activision and Nintendo, but every 2 years since the start of the CoD franchise, Activision has had visible spikes in their worth due to massive amounts of sales, and at these periods, they beat EA and Nintendo. While Activision are currently worth more (due to their massive amounts raked in from World of War craft) their shares are worth considerably less due to more people buying shares, while EA currently have shares of higher value as not as many people have shares in the company. Nintendo on the Other hand, while worth less than Activision their stocks are worth considerably less, this is probably because Nintendo is a more widely known Company, thus more people are taking hold of shares, resulting in their low value.
